Harriet Tubman was born a slave in 1820 on a plantation in Dorchester County, Maryland. Her parents named her Aramita Ross. In 1849 at almost 30 years of age, Harriet set out to secure her freedom from slavery and traveled 90 miles north to Pennsylvania. Though she was successful in her escape, she risked it many more times to lead others out of bondage before the Civil War. Ms. Tubman was also a humanitarian, a nurse, a Union spy and a women’s suffrage supporter. Tubman is one of the most recognized icons in American history and is an inspiration for others all around the world.
